Why EV Charger Inspections Matter
EV chargers are high-powered electrical systems connected directly to your main distribution board.
If they’re incorrectly installed, poorly maintained or damaged over time, they can become a serious fire hazard, cause tripping issues, or affect the overall stability of your electrical supply.
Regular inspection helps to:
Confirm the installation complies with BS 7671 and the latest IET Wiring Regulations
Identify overheating, loose connections, or insulation breakdown
Check RCD protection, earthing, and isolation switching
Detect signs of wear, mechanical damage or environmental exposure
Provide a clear paper trail for insurance and regulatory compliance
Whether you’re expanding your EV charging provision or checking an existing setup, ESI delivers independent, reliable testing and advice.
What Our EV Charger Inspection Include:
Our inspection and testing service covers all key components of your EV charging system, including:
Visual inspection of charger housing, cable fixings, isolation and signage
Thermal imaging to check for heat buildup or overcurrent risks
Testing of RCDs, earth loop impedance, polarity and insulation resistance
Check of circuit protection and load capacity at the main distribution board
Functional testing to confirm charging output and fault response
Compliance review against BS 7671 Section 722 and IET Code of Practice for EV Charging (4th Edition)
Optional load monitoring to check if your installation can handle future expansion
We provide a detailed inspection report with photographic evidence and clear recommendations for any remedial work needed.
How Often Should EV Chargers Be Inspected?
While EV chargers don’t need annual servicing like a vehicle, the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require that all workplace electrical systems are maintained in a safe condition.
We recommend:
Every 12 months for high-usage commercial sites (e.g. staff car parks, depots)
Every 3-5 years for low-use installations or in line with your EICR cycle
Additional inspections after modifications, faults, or weather damage
